Content Guidelines: Handling Themes of Abuse
Domestic, child, psychological, and other forms of abuse
Abuse content spans multiple categories, each with specific considerations while sharing common principles about responsible handling of serious topics.
Domestic abuse themes may be explored in fictional contexts with proper warnings and tags. Characters may have histories of experiencing or perpetrating domestic abuse when it serves narrative purposes without glorification. However, content based on real events, containing visual depictions of violence, or targeting real individuals is prohibited.
Child abuse requires the strictest handling. While characters may reference childhood abuse in their backstories for narrative purposes, content themed around child abuse or containing visual depictions is absolutely prohibited. This includes both physical mistreatment and sexual abuse of minors. It is very important that you keep descriptions of historical child abuse in an adult characters backstory high level / not detailed. An acceptable background reference would be 'was sexually abused as a child'. This does not describe specific actions, but still allows for a character personality to be informed by their past.
Psychological and emotional abuse, coercive control, manipulation, mind control, and similar themes follow similar guidelines. These serious topics can be explored fictionally with proper warnings, but content based on real events or targeting real people is forbidden.
Financial abuse and discriminatory abuse based on race, gender, religion, or other characteristics may also be explored in fictional contexts with appropriate warnings, but real-world events and targeting of real groups or individuals remains prohibited across all abuse categories.
When it comes to power dynamics, janitor allows them as part of an overall narrative. Just make sure the other themes stick within the rules.
