Custom CSS Copying & Credit Policy
Janitorai allows users to use CSS to customize their profiles. The following policy covers how users are expected to use other peoples CSS, and moderation outcomes. Please read the following carefully:
Copied CSS
Profiles that use custom CSS that has been copied from other sources need to gain the original creators permission first, and credit said creator if requested.
If someone allows other users to copy their CSS openly without permission, but asks that credit be given, users must credit.
If CSS is copied without permission or credit where asked, and this is then reported to moderators, they will be asked to remove it by moderation. If they refuse, their custom CSS will be disabled, along with their ability to customize their own CSS going forwards.
Malicious CSS
If a profile uses custom CSS in a malicious way, such as to stop people using the block button easily, and this is then reported to moderators, the users custom CSS will be disabled, along with their ability to customize their own CSS going forwards.
FAQ
I am the author of some CSS and have not given permission for it to be copied, and have found a profile that is using my CSS. What should I do?
Please go to https://help.janitorai.com/en/ and report it by emailing us or raising it through the chatbot. Be sure to include proof that you either coded the CSS yourself or paid a commission for it.
I have seen a profile on the site that uses custom CSS and I want to use some of it as a baseline for my own. They don't say whether or not people can copy it. What should I do?
Reach out to the user and ask for their permission. If they are not the author of it, they can signpost you to the correct source to see if you need to gain permission.
I want to copy another user's CSS and they say they give open permission, but want to be credited. How do I do that?
Credit them in your user profile, eg: Custom CSS by <profile name>
I am being accused of stealing someones CSS but I wrote it myself. What do I do?
If you have been reported and a moderator has asked that you change it, but you have not copied it, you can give your evidence to moderation via https://help.janitorai.com/en/
What kind of CSS code will be moderated?
Only CSS that you authored or paid for that is unique to your own profile and is of a complexity or uniqueness that cannot reasonably be expected to have been gained without using yours as a baseline will be moderated.
How can I prove that my CSS was copied?
The burden of proof will be on the user who is raising the complaint. The following is a non-exhaustive list of the sorts of data you will need to provide to build your case:
- Direct CSS matches - identical selectors, property orders, whitespace patterns, comments etc.
- Unique fingerprints - unusual/quirky/unique class names or IDs that you use
- Version/Date - timestamped evidence of your CSS structure pre-dating the user you are accusing
- Complexity - specific layouts/animations that are hard to replicate exactly
How can I protect my CSS so that I can more easily prove when someone copies it without my consent?
Adding a silent 'easter egg' to your code that is hard to notice and doesn't present itself visually is recommended.
I am helping someone in the Janitor Discord css-forum, and provide some of my own custom CSS to someone as a framework. It is complex and not easily to reasonably replicate. Can I ask them to give me credit on the site?
Yes
