OpenRouter Error Guide
OR Proxy Error Guide
Things break sometimes, and when they do, you get weird, cryptic error messages. This guide translates those messages into plain language and tells you exactly what went wrong and how to fix it. Whether it’s a wrong model name, too many tokens, or just the provider having a bad day, this section has your back.
Fix-It First: Proxy Error Basics
Before you worry about what the error message says, take a second to make sure your setup isn’t just... being fussy.
Step 1: Open your config and check if it says Active. If it doesn’t, click to activate it.
Step 2: Now hit Save Settings, yes, even if you didn’t change anything.
Step 3: Then refresh the entire Janitor.AI page.
Step 4: Once you’re back in, re-open your config and click Test
. If things still aren’t working, that’s when it’s time to match your error message to the quick guide below.
Proxy Errors
“This model’s maximum context length is X tokens. However, you requested Y tokens…” (400)
You’ve overloaded the model with too many tokens. That includes your bot personality, your message, Chat Memory(CM), Advanced Prompt(AP)
Fix: Use shorter messages, trim down memory, or switch to a smaller/simpler bot.
“Prompt tokens limit X > Y. To increase…” (402)
You don’t have enough balance for the request.
Fix: Use a free model (:free at the end), add credits, or upgrade your OpenRouter plan to increase limits.
“No allowed providers are available for the selected model” (404)
You’ve restricted your provider settings too much.
Fix: In OpenRouter settings, unblock all Ignored Providers and clear Allowed Providers. Then save.
“No endpoints found for model name” (404)
That model either no longer exists or isn’t available right now.
Fix: Try a more current version. For example, deepseek-chat-v3:free
was replaced with deepseek-chat-v3-0324:free
.
“No endpoints found matching your data policy.” (404)
This means your privacy settings are blocking model access.
Fix: Enable Model Training under Privacy Settings.
“timeout” (408)
Servers are slow or overloaded.
Fix: Wait it out, then try again. You can check the OpenRouter Discord for updates.
“Rate limit exceeded: free-models-per-day” (429)
You hit your daily cap. Even error messages count toward this limit.
Fix: Free users get 50 messages/day. With $10+ in credits, you can get 1000/day. The limit resets at 7:00 PM (12:00 AM UTC). Either wait, or upgrade to lift the cap.
“[model] is temporarily rate-limited upstream…” (429)
That model is currently overloaded.
Fix: Use a different model, or switch to a paid version.
“Provider returned error” (502)
Something broke on the provider’s end.
Fix: Check your model’s Uptime tab on OpenRouter. Try another model or wait.
“Unknown response: [object Object]”
Usually means you’ve hit your message limit, or the model didn’t return data.
Fix: Wait for the reset at 12:00 UTC, or reduce usage to avoid triggering it again.
“Provider Returned Error”
A vague message, often from overloaded servers.
Fix: Check uptime or try a different provider/model.
“A network error occurred…” (General Connection Error)
Most likely, your API URL is wrong, or you didn’t refresh after saving changes.
Fix: API URL must be exactly https://openrouter.ai/api/v1/chat/completions
With no extra slashes, no repeated segments. After setting it, refresh Janitor
“Network Error”
You probably clicked the “Check Key/Model” button, which is buggy.
Fix: Ignore it. Save and refresh the page instead.
Advanced Troubleshooting OpenRouter
If you’ve tried everything above and it’s still broken:
Step 1: Block Taragon Provider Some models run poorly on Taragon. Go to OpenRouter Settings → Ignored Providers → Add “Taragon” → Save → Refresh Janitor.
Step 2: Watch for model filters Models like Gemini 2.5 may silently fail if your prompt hits certain filters. Try a different phrasing, or a different model.
Step 3: Try a new API key Keys sometimes bug out. Generate a fresh one and test it.
Step 3: Use DevTools Fix (PC Only)
Miscellaneous Errors
Unknown Worker Error
Message:
“Unknown prompt response from worker for OpenAI proxy generation”
Fix: Refresh JanitorAI — this is usually caused by a momentary queue or proxy hiccup.
