Step-by-Step Bot Creation Guide

by Aurellea

Introduction

Welcome to my bot guide! So, you want to learn to make bots but you're unsure of where to start or what resources you might need? Maybe you're a visual learner like me. Well below I'll take you through a step-by-step guide with visuals for how to make a bot. We'll make one together and go through my personal process for how I create!

Warning: This guide will have NSFW sections & content.

First Steps

Creating A Character

To create a character, you'll want to navigate over to your drop down menu if you're on mobile (Bottom Right) or the "Create a Character" button on Desktop (Top Right).

The various buttons for Create a Character

Create A Character Page

Important: When editing a character, make sure you save often! (Put an x or a . in the Required boxes so you can do so).

Let's go through this section by section and break down what we see for the first main area.

First section for Create a Character

Image

This is where you will upload an image for the bot card. This is what most people see first when browsing for a bot! Let's start by uploading a picture together, shall we? I prefer uploading images with an aspect ratio of 2:3 and I personally use Midjourney to make my art, and then add touchups or edits in an external art program like Ibis Paint, ClipStudio, etc.

Warning: Keep in mind that all images must comply with our image moderation and TOS. This means no minors, no sexual acts, no genitalia/nudity, no heavy gore, etc. Images with explicit themes need to be properly censored. If you think your image is getting falsely flagged, please reach out to Customer Support for assistance.

You can see what type of images JanitorAI supports [HERE]!

Here's what an uploaded images looks like!

Character Name (Required)

This field is required and what will show up on the bot for everyone to see! Let's give our guy a name, shall we? I put a lot of time researching my character names for my bots, personally, but you don't have to! You can be as silly or methodical as you want. I'm thinking this will be a Vampire Hunter bot, with grimdark medieval themes. Since I want to make this a pseudo-historical bot, let's make him from an area that was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire (like Transylvania for example). I want to avoid the obvious names first (like Simon, since that's attributed to Simon Belmont from Castlevania). I'm thinking we'll name him Alex Fekete. Alex has been observed in Hungarian nomenclature which derives from Alexander - which means "to defend men"; fitting for a vampire hunter! His last name - Fekete - is a Hungarian last name that means "Black"; nice and edgy.

Tip: You can include a "sub-name" in this field such as the bot's role, a fancy title, bot theme, etc!

Tip: Name Resources

Behind The Name - Good for etymology of names from various cultures (always cross reference)

Fantasy Name Generator - The classic. Has a generator for every kind of creature, person, etc.

ChatGPT - Is a great resource for generating names, both based in real life and fantasy.

Behind The Name Generator - Like above, but in a generator feature!

Mythpedia - Massive database for creating names based on fantasy race, class, IRL cultures, etc.

Microsoft Edge Copilot - Like ChatGPT, can be great at generating names

Character Chat Name

This field is what will show up in the chat when a User is typing with the bot. You can put anything you want here, but I tend to put the full name of the character (which makes it easier for the User to reference the last name easily if needed).

Let's view what these fields filled out look like!

Character Bio

This is the bread and butter for what people will see firstly in the preview card and also when they click on your bot. You can make this as pretty, in-depth or as basic as you want! First, let's break down what each button does.

1) Paragraph: This button lets you add a Heading 1-6 which adjusts the size of the font. At this current time, however, this only shows up on your end in the editing window.

2) Typography Emphasis: (In order of Left to Right) B - Bold, I - Italics, U - Underline

3) Colour Selections: (Left) Highlighter, gives your font a coloured background. (Right) Palette Wheel, gives your text a different colour.

4) Paragraph Orientation: (In order of Left to Right) Centered, Justified, Left, Right.

5) Image: Insert an image. This is currently disabled for everyone but the creator. Meaning if you add an image, only you will see it.

6) Hyperlink: Add a link to an outside source (or even another bot)! Highlight your text, click the button, paste the link and press "set link". To unlink, click the little broken chain icon in that menu.

7) Source Code: Here you can add HTML code to make your Character Bio pretty. We will cover this in depth more below.

Here is an example of what all the various buttons do for visual learners like myself:

Great! Now we know the basic functions of what everything does. So, let's get started on actually writing out character bio out.

For starters, the first things you write in your character bio will show up in your preview bot card (see image below). For me, I always include a catchy short sentence about the bot, or maybe a quote to set the mood. You can include some brief tags, or some people even include a Kink preview as well. Below I'll show you an example of what I'll be using for this bot, as well as some others that I've done in the past.

NSFW Mention Below (Kinks)

What we're writing (including a page break using ---, which we will touch on later)

How it looks in the preview - this is what everyone else will see first!

See More Examples Below

Pure story intro

Using a quote

Quote + Kinks (Unfortunately PC makes the quote look incredibly tiny for whatever reason)

There's no real wrong way to format this section, so it's entirely up to you. Get creative, use pretty ⋆˙⟡ Sparkles ✧˖°., emojis - whatever you want! Let's continue. I'll show you how I personally design my bot profiles. I created a blank rough outline of my bot info, then I just copy and paste it into a new bot and edit it as needed. This is what mine looks like before I add anything in (I'll provide the source code for this template down below too at the end of this section).

Note: The Character Bio section accepts Markdown.

* = Italics

** = Bold

__ = Underline

~~ = Strikethrough

--- = Linebreak

- = Bulletpoints

I use "The Story" to flesh out the snippet that people see at the top of the bio. "Inside Look" is where I put my Trigger Warnings, Warnings Continued, Notes (Whatever I feel like putting here, usually additional little warnings like "he's actually a sweetheart, the trigger warnings are for backstory mention" or if a character is based off of a book character, links to alt bots, etc.) "Lore" is where I put more in-depth lore for my bot, such as setting or NPCs. "FAQ" is where I put User's Role (which I always try to leave as open ended as possible) and "Script Triggering" (See below).

Note: Scripts is in active early alpha testing, and only a few select creators have access to it. This is JAI's lorebook feature that uses Javascript (guide to come in the future). It allows a User to prompt a lore entry as needed when a set requirement is met (x amount of messages, or mentioning a trigger word (ex. "Vampire").

In "Additionals" I put what I test my bots the most on (DeepSeek personally), instructions to use Advanced Prompts to tailor your experience, and a disclaimer that issues with the LLM are not due to coding, it's just the LLM. I also say where I made my bot image.

Let's fill this area out!

Filled out!

I like the gradient text for my bots, but you do not have to do it. It is difficult to do on mobile, and time consuming on desktop, but if you like it and want to do it too this is how I do it: Highlight the entire text > Set Base Colour + Copy Hex Code > Highlight a section past the Base Colour (measure with your heart) > Open Colour Palette > Paste Hex Code > Move Colour Picker until it's adjusted to a slightly different shade > Copy Hex Code > Repeat.

Here is a blank Source Code for an above format (without the fancy additions and colours).

<p>Intro Here</p><p>Intro Here</p><p>Intro Here</p><hr><p><strong>The Story ―</strong></p><p>Store Information Here</p><hr><p><strong> Inside Look ―</strong></p><p><strong><u>Trigger Warnings</u>:</strong> Triggers Here</p><p><strong><u>Notes</u>: </strong>Notes Here</p><hr><p><strong>Lore ―</strong></p><p>Lore Here</p><hr><p><strong>F.A.Q.</strong></p><p><strong><u>User's Role</u></strong>: xxx</p><hr><p><strong> Additionals ―</strong></p>

Character Settings

This is where we will set our tags for the bot. You can review the Tags available in a list format [HERE]. For now, let's take a look at what this area looks like and decide on tags.

Tag Selection

You can have a maximum of 10 tags (including custom tags). Music Mania Tag is if you want to include music on the bot (it doesn't auto-play) via SoundCloud. I don't use this, I just add a song link at the bottom of my bots personally to free a tag up.

Personally, I always include the Gender of the bot (In this case Male), and the POV (AnyPOV, since I always make my bots AnyPOV - this means that anyone can use it regardless of identity). It also makes it easier for people to find the bots they're interested in. Proper tagging is important! Let's fill out the rest here, okay?

My Chosen Tags

For this bot I selected the following:

  • Male: Because he's a male character
  • Dominant: I always do Limitless bots, so I always include if a bot is a Dom/Switch/Sub. You don't have to do this!
  • AnyPOV: For what POV the bot is in. In this case, open to men, women, NB, etc.
  • Dead Dove: Because this bot is going to touch on grimdark themes and potential triggers for kinks, I will include Dead Dove.
  • Angst: For highly emotional scenarios. I think that being hunted by a vampire hunter as a vampire would be incredibly stressful, so angst seems appropriate here.
  • Enemies to Lovers: This bot starts out with him hunting you, he's your enemy. But it could become more!
  • Horror: For the Grimdark setting and the overall themes surrounding the world and vampires.
  • Vampire: Because he is a Vampire Hunter and User is a Vampire. Tags can also apply to the User as well!
  • Vampire Hunter: Custom tag, to specify that he is the vampire hunter.

Notice how we didn't use all 10? You don't need to use all of them!

Let's move onto the next section.

Content Rating

Limited/Limitless

This is is what you set your bot to for content. You can find the full info [HERE], but let's give a quick, rough breakdown.

  • Limited: This is essentially your SFW bots. You cannot include NSFW coding in these bots (that includes NSFW anti-prompting to dissuade the LLMs away from topics). These are typically family bots, wholesome content, etc.
  • Limitless: This is essentially your NSFW bots. You can include NSFW coding in these bots, but you don't need to. These are typically where you'd find smut bots, darker themes such as horror, etc.
Did you save yet? Don't forget to save!

Personality (Required)

This is the soul of your character. This is where you will put the "code", which will tell your bot how to behave when RPing. There's no real wrong way to make this section. Some people create short-story style narratives to describe the bot, some create list formats, some do hybrids - it's all valid! Keep in mind that the more you add, however, doesn't necessarily mean that the bot will be better. Personalities are "Permanent Tokens", which means the bot will always remember this info. Let's break this down into something easier to understand.

Permanent Tokens

These are tokens that will always be remembered by the bot. If you have a Context Limit of 9k, but your bot has 4k permanent tokens, that means you only have 5k left for memory. What does this mean? It means that your bot will forget more often and faster. Keep in mind that your Persona, Chat Memory, Messages and Bot Personality & Scenario all eat up Context Limit.

Quick breakdown: 9k Total Context Limit. Personality: 4k, Persona: 1k, Chat Memory: 700. That leaves 3300 tokens. If you're long winded in your responses like me and making 800+ token responses, your bot will forget real quick, causing important information to be lost. It might forget your name, your features, what room you're in (weren't you just in the kitchen?)

So less is sometimes more!

Regardless of what type of format you use to make your bots, play around with what works best for you. Some LLMs have more context limit (like DeepSeek, Gemini, OpenAI, etc).

Let's actually start creating our Vampire Hunter!

Blank personality section

I like formatting mine in a list format because I find it easier to read when it's broken down into sections (I will include a blank template at the end of this section).

For now, let's focus on my first three main sections.

Character Info, Body Info & Outfit Info filled out

Let's break down what we're looking at above!

  • Name: This is what the bot will be called. You can include a singular name, a full name, a full name + title, etc. If you want to do a Nickname or Alias, just include it below in a section like - Alias: xxx
  • Age: For this bot, Alex is 34. He's an experienced vampire hunter, he's had time and years to perfect his craft.
Reminder: All bots on JAI need appropriate age coding. They must be: 18+ or stated to be an Adult. Acceptable Age Coding: 18, 9032, Adult, Senior, Old. For Immortal Characters, you can say "Age: Immortal (Appears 22)".
  • Occupation: Alex is a Vampire Hunter, so we're going to include that! If your character is a college student instead, you can say that and then include the degree they're going for! Or Unemployed if they don't have a j*b.
  • Nationality: You don't need to include this, but because we're going with the bot being based on the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Nationality can help prompt the AI to pull from that culture. If you're using a fantasy race, you can instead use - Race: Elf for example! (Or both, even)!
  • Body Info includes information about what this character looks like. Height is pretty self explanatory! You can write it like 6'1", 6'1, 6-ft 1-inch, or even 185.4cm!
  • Hair: Describes the character's hair style, length and colour. You can leave this simple or details for more complex hair styles, just keep in mind that the more details and elaborate you go, the harder it will be for the LLM to accurately portray it.
  • Eyes: Like the hair, try to keep it basic and simple. The LLMs struggle with over the top descriptions like "Shining Bright Blue Eyes" - it might assume that his eyes glowed if we wrote that!
  • Complexion: I use Complexion instead of Skin Tone as a catch all. Describe his skin tone, his skin type and if he has any beauty marks or facial hair. (You might want to include "Clean Shaven" if you don't want the LLM to assume your bot has stubble, it likes to do that).
  • Physique: This is body type! Are they strong and beefy? Muscular? Weak, wimpy and scrawny? You can include that here. Be direct or get a little flowery if you want. I like being direct and then adding a brief little snippet of what they're built for or why they're muscular/weak/etc. ex: Lean, strong, and coiled like a fighter. Still trains daily in both kendo and jujutsu
  • Outfit Style: This section will give your bot an overall theme for what kind of clothes they wear and should wear. For the style itself, I always keep it basic. ex: Tailored black or charcoal suits. The LLMs struggles with defining some aesthetics like e-boy, cyberwear, streetwear, etc. sometimes, so just be mindful of that. I usually include an aesthetic if there is one, and then an example outfit, using keywords like "Gothic", "Sporty", "Tailored", etc.
  • Starting Clothes: This will prompt your bot to know what they're wearing. If you're finding that the bot is refusing to change out of this outfit, you can remove this section entirely if you want! I think this works best for Proxies like DeepSeek, Gemini, etc.
  • Accessories: Jewelry, trinkets, etc. Pretty self explanatory! If your character has notable accessories they favour, you can write it here.

Wonderful! Now that that's broken down, let's move on to my next sections and look at those!

Personality Info, Speech, and Relationships

Cool, so now that we have that area filled out, let's break that down, shall we?

  • Archetype: You don't need to include this, I just enjoy creating overarching archetypes for my bots. It's fun coming up with unique names that fit them. For this one, I went with "The Relentless" to signify Alex's relentless drive as a vampire hunter.
  • Personality Traits: I keep my personality traits as a short list and limit it to about 5, since I will be adding more personality traits per situation below. This is his overarching main personality.
  • With {{user}}: This is his personality when he's around {{User}}! He'll most likely act different around them just because of who they are. We want to expand a little here to signify that he's struggling to do his job.
  • When Angry: I like including Anger as one of the main emotions. You can include other emotions too, like - When Sad: if you want! For now, though, we're just going to focus on Anger. I feel like Alex is quiet. He locks in, focuses up and gets that scary quiet angry. Again, keeping it short and simple so we don't overload the LLM and make it confused.
  • Quirks/Habits: Adding a Quirk/Habit section can make your bot feel more alive. Alex, while a great hunter, is still a person at the end of the day. He's probably killed a fair share of vampires in his life - those vampires were once people with lives and he's probably haunted by some of them. So we'll add a quirk that he talks to his "ghosts", probably as a coping mechanism. Vampire Hunting can be a lonely job! We'll also add that he sleeps with his gun, because that's just the smart and safe thing to do here. The scrap of letter from someone long gone is a token that can hint to his past. It can create an opening for some interesting RP down the road.
  • Likes/Dislikes: Like above, helps flesh out the character to feel more alive by giving them preferences. These can be as simple as "Likes: Blue, Rain, Corndogs" or more in depth like "Dislikes: When people look at him too long, the smell of old cigars, the feeling of wet socks in his boots". Both are fine! Again, personal preference here. For Alex, I went with that he likes quiet because it's what he's used to as a lone hunter. Overcast Skies and Graveyards he likes because of the profession, but also a deeper pull that we can hint at in RP. Good boots for all the traveling he does. He dislikes nobility and religious hypocrisy due to the lore we set for Greyhollow and The Ashen Veil we wrote in the bio section. He doesn't like unnecessary touching and he dislikes wine because he needs to be sober for the job.
  • Secret: You can include a secret to give your bot more depth and nuance. For me, I added that our hunter once killed a fellow hunter and it haunts him. I left the reason vague, to let the AI come up with a unique reason which can sometimes help with replayability for bots by creating an unique answer and experience each time!
  • Speech: This is his Speech pattern/style and if he has accents. You can also add if they know other languages in this area if you want. Alex is a man of few words.
  • Relationships: This is an important section that will dictate how he behaves dynamically with {{user}}, as well as anyone else you want to add. For this bot we're not adding extra NPCs. If you do add an extra NPC, try to keep it short like so: - Abraham: 44, 5'11. Short greying hair, blue eyes. Vampire Hunter. Alex's Mentor. Stern, focused, strict. Currently Retired and living in Greyhollow

Awesome, now let's get on to his skills and backstory!

Skills, Backstory filled out

Let's break that down now, yeah?

  • Skills & Abilities: This section breaks down some of the skills that Alex has, and this is where you'd put skills or powers your bot might have. That could be painting, cooking, combat, superpowers, etc. As a hunter, it makes sense that he'd have combat based skills, as well as tracking! Since he's been in the Ashen Veil for awhile as a hunter, he's probably studied up on how best to kill and hunt vampires, which means he'd be knowledgeable about vampire anatomy, lore or weaknesses. I've included that the Ashen Veil probably forced them to take potions over the years to weaken vampiric effects on him so he's a better hunter, shaping him into a perfect weapon against vampires.
  • Backstory: This is where you'll add information about a bot's history. Where they were born, what led to the point they were now. Creating a backstory is often times the hardest part of bot creating because it's very easy to go overboard and add too much. Let's see what I added above to Alex. Tying in his heritage to where he was born, as well as a brief mention of his mother and father - which the AI can use as a catalyst for WHY he's so into hunting vampires, coupled with the fact that he's just been conditioned from a young age to be the way he is. We briefly touch upon the fact that he's experiencing some doubt, giving him flaws to make him feel more personable and to up the stakes (no pun intended). We also explain here why he's become so quiet and withdrawn - that he's been conditioned and trained so much that it became all he knew really. Friendships are a liability, a weakness, and he can't afford that!

Now let's move on to the next section, shall we? You can skip this section if you're using a Limited bot and go right down to the next one!

Warning: NSFW Section Below. Scroll to the Green Banner if you wish to avoid this section.

Sexual Info + Kinks

Okay, let's take a some-what deeper dive. I won't go into a full detailed list of why I picked each specific kink, as for me I go off of vibes for what feels right with what we know about the character so far.

  • Sexuality: This section is where you will put the NSFW info (or tailor it as needed). - Privates: can be used instead, but since I tend to make more male-centric characters, I just use "Cock". Here I list out the details describing his penis. I tend to make my bots packing schmeat because it's what I like. I also like describing the balls - full (this doesn't mean "full of sperm", it means roundness), saggy, tight/taught, wrinkly, etc. I also enjoy adding in sections about pubic hair, because it is a kink for some and also I think it adds a nice touch. You can tell a lot about a character based on personal grooming habits (or lack thereof)! I also include how my bots act during and after sex and a romance section. I have tried other ways (like listing Kinks & Mannerisms), but this is what I like best. Do what works for you! You can also add Sexual Orientation in this section if you want. All of my bots are (in my mind) canonically pansexual so I don't bother adding it.
  • Kinks: I used to have this section be Kinks + Mannerisms, but I combined them to instead include a brief little snippet about how he is with each kink. I've found that it saves me tokens so I can spend those tokens elsewhere. I won't get into why I picked what I picked, but I think it fits his character - again, vibes. Do what feels best.

And now, we'll move on to the last section for the personality area - additional lore!

Notice: NSFW Area over!

Setting & Additional Lore

  • Setting: This is where you'd include information about time (era, year, etc) and location. I don't always include this in my bots, but since this one is more historical I will include a rough setting ~ means "About" when used for numbers, so I use it here to give a rough timeframe, as well as the generalized area. Since Alex travels to hunt, I've included just the overarching general area. I like to do a lot of research when I make bots from other cultures or areas that I'm not from so I can get things as accurate as possible and done as respectfully as I can. Always make sure you cross reference sources. Since this is more a fantasy based bot, I won't do too much research this time and leave it at the time period and the setting mention.
  • Additional Lore: This is where I usually include extra little snippets of info that might be important. For this bot, we're going to paraphrase the lore we added in the bot biography section earlier in the guide. If a setting has a chance to take place in the bot's home frequently, I like to add information about their house/apartment/flat here.

And we're done! Wow, that was a lot of work, but look at you, you're going to do a great job making bots. Let's go ahead and move on to the next sections. Up next is Scenario, Initial Message, and Example Dialogues.

Scenario, Initial Message, Example Dialogs

Scenario

Scenario is a Permanent token area that will help keep the bot on track. Keep it short and simple and go for overall theme and vibes instead. For this, we're going to input the following for ours: {{user}} is a vampire hunted by Alex, a vampire hunter

Short, sweet, all vibes. You can also just not put anything in here. I usually don't, but to showcase for this bot I will. Some people also include short lore snippets here too!

Initial Message (Required)

This is a temporary token area, which means that it will be forgotten eventually as the RP continues. When writing the intro message, avoid narrating {{user}}'s actions and speaking for them as this will prompt the bot to speak for the User. If you have to write about what the User is doing for narrative purposes, do it from the character's POV. For example: Alex watched {{user}} through the trees as they drained the blood of an unsuspecting traveling merchant. He had been tracking them for days now through the forest and finally - finally - here they were. Feasting, like the beast they were, unaware of his presence.

I like using past tense words (words ending in -ed like looked, watched, ran), but some creators like using present tense (running, watching, screaming). It's personal preference, and just what I like! Both are good. Try not to mix them, though, as it can confuse the bot.

Example Dialogs:

This section is used for creating example dialogs or speech patterns for your characters. Even though the example below the box shows {{user}} responding, avoid doing this as it will prompt the bot to speak for {{user}}. You do not need to use this area, and most creators include their speech dialogs in the bot personality itself so it's permanent tokens. I will not be using this, as I personally don't like to use it.

Here is what they all look like filled out (or as close to filled out as they get for my bot making style):

Next Steps

So we fully fleshed out a character! Now what? Now, make sure you save (or Update Character if you've been saving as you go. You have been saving as you go, right?). Once we save, it will take us back out to our main bot page. When you create a bot, it is automatically set to Private. You'll need to change the settings. Let's take a look at where to do that, shall we?

Bot Settings

  • Public: Toggles the bot to Public or Private. If it's to the left and greyed out, it's private (you can see the Visibility section below too for verbal confirmation).
  • Show Definitions: This hides the bot code from others. Some people like to keep their bots private, and that's okay! Some like them open. I keep all of mine open, personally, so people can read about the bot and choose what they want to RP with in case they dislike the themes. As before, if it's ticked to the left, it's Hidden (you can see verbal confirmation below as well).
  • Allow Proxies: This allows (or disallows) people to use proxies like DeepSeek, Claude, Gemini, etc with bots. If it's disabled (ticked left) then they are "Blocked", and people have to use Janitor's LLM. Keep in mind, that allowing proxies is a personal preference. I like to keep mine open, because I like chatting with my bots using DeepSeek.

Set those to what you want, and then wa-la! Once you hit Public, you're good to go!

I'll include some additional resources below that might help in your bot making journey. Good luck, and remember, have fun!
